Our Help Comes From the Lord
Psalm 121, Trinity Sunday XX
October 18, 2015
Beloved of the Lord.....We are all quite familiar with Hymn 370, My Hope is Built on Nothing Less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. Verse three of this hymn agrees well with our text, “His oath, His covenant, and blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When every earthly prop gives way, He then is all my Hope and Stay. On Christ the solid Rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand.” There are times in life where it is just this way, everything around us is sinking, and we stand in sinking sand. An overwhelming flood of troubles and sorrows come our way, so all that we trusted in before has vanished or betrayed us. The phrase every earthly prop gives way makes a lot of sense to those Christians who have been sorely tried. We trusted in someone close but they betrayed us. We trusted in our wealth but it has disappeared. We trusted in our health, but we are sick. We trusted in our own reason or intellect, but we were made fools. We trusted in our home but we lost it. We trusted in friends but they forsook us. Of course we should never trust or put our confidence in any earthly prop, but all our confidence should rest in our Lord above, who is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” And it is because the Lord is gracious to you, dear believer, He wants you to come to Him in prayer because God is the Helper of the helpless! Thus when every earthly prop gives way, remember Psalm 121, and remember to pray…. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
I. God is the helper of the helpless. Today’s psalm is naturally about prayer and how the believer can trust and know God will help them through all their problems in life. When the psalmist says “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills”, this does not mean we pray to the hills, but these hills were a reference to the hills of Jerusalem, upon which Solomon’s Temple was built. His prayer was directed there because God had promised to be there in that Temple, above the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. Yet believers in the Old Testament knew also that God is in the heavens, and He does not dwell only in temples made with hands. In like manner the place where we pray does not matter, nor the time, nor the direction of our head facing up our down, but what matters is that God has reconciled us sinners to Himself by His only-begotten Son, and for Jesus’ sake, all who believe will surely be heard, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, Who gave himself a ransom for all.”
As for the lifting up of the eyes in prayer, this is similar to other psalms where the believer lifts up their soul to God, laying bare the desires of their heart, or they lift their hands to God, seeking a gift or blessing of mercy. Psalm 25 says “Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee.” Note the absolute dependence upon that soul with God, for the soul of faith knows that only God can help him or her out of all their troubles. As for the lifting up of hands, Nehemiah 8:6 says, “And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.” Psalm 141:2 also says “Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” They did literally lift up their hands in prayer sometimes. This is why in the New Testament the Apostle Paul writes, “I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” I Tim. 2:8 Holy hands lifted up is a symbol of expectation of the Lord’s blessings, an act of faith and not doubt. Whatever we pray for, we should not doubt God can and will give it, as long as it benefits us spiritually. The faith God has given us believes and expects and trust God will be gracious for Jesus’ sake, so there is no need to doubt God will help in time of need. Let it also be said that in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches today they commonly lift up their hands in prayer and that is not wrong or sinful. But we as Lutherans do not do this as a way to distinguish ourselves from them, because we do not want to be connected to their false teaching of being filled directly with the Spirit by way of dreams and visions and tongues. God’s revelation of Himself to us comes to us through the written Word we have in our Bibles, and we need nothing else.
And God’s Word plainly tells us today, that when we have problems and trials in life, we shouldn’t just take our burdens to the Lord in prayer, but we should also firmly believe and trust God has great power to help, because “My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth!” God reminds us that He is the Almighty and omnipotent Creator, by whose word alone the heaven and earth were created in in six 24 hour days, so that we will surely understand, nothing is too hard for the Lord, and that He is able “to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.”
Therefore dear believer, if or when you reach that point in life, where you are so confused that you don’t know what to do anymore, or it seems every door, every path you have chosen to come to a solution is closed, that is the time you must stop everything and lift up your eyes to the hills and pray for help! Few things are worse in this world, than feeling helpless or trapped so there is no viable path out of our problems. Yet if that is the place you are in, understand God Himself has put you there, so you learn better the meaning that the Lord is the Helper of the helpless, “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
But God does have a plan and a path for us, but it is usually the one we do not expect nor comprehend. Remember how the Children of Israel were once trapped between Pharaoh and the Red Sea. Surely they were helpless and could not see a path or way out of their problem, but God had a plan. His grace alone made a path so they walked through the midst of the sea. Your life on earth dear believer, is the midst of that sea, and likewise it is a wilderness of sin, but God still has a path for you through it, through you cannot see it or comprehend. What matters most is Jesus has already walked that path before you and prepared a way. By His own offering and sacrifice of Himself upon the cross for your sins, He created a path and way for you which leads strait to heaven. Therefore “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
Speaking on this point Luther wisely said, “We should learn to praise and thank God even though He does not come to our aid when we should like to have Him come. We should accustom ourselves to His way and be patient even though He delays…. real praising and thanking must be done by being still, holding on, and patiently waiting for His help; for the nature of God is such that He does not permit us to determine the person, the time, and the place, the what, the when, and the how, of His giving.” (WLS #1928). While you wait then for God’s deliverance, have courage and faith for it is written “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD……For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.”
II. The Lord will not allow you to fall away. As you wait then you can also have all confidence God will see you through to the end, because “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.” This is similar to …..”Cast thy burdens upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee, He shall not suffer the righteous to be moved!” This means God will keep and preserve your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that solid rock upon which your faith rests and is build. When you feel as though your feet are slipping, you must take your eyes off of your sin and guilt, fear and worry, and rest your eyes upon Jesus whose blood still pleads your innocence before God’s throne on high. No matter how powerful the devil may be or the strength of your enemies it is written, “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.” This means God is active in our faith, not passive. He is not like a father who throws his son into the water saying “sink or swim”, but instead He is a good and gentle Shepherd that promises us “Certainly I will be with thee”. God is vigilant in our lives, always guarding and watching over both our body and soul, especially preserving our faith by the Means of Grace, our Baptism and Gospel preaching. When our enemies come near to spiritually assault us, He is like a shield around us 24/7, or a constant companion and friend though we see Him not. He is also like a soldier who goes before us into every battle, and He guards our back also, even our left and right side. He is above us, higher than the heavens so He has great power, and He is below us also, serving our every need, even serving our weaknesses, not allowing anything to destroy our faith because “A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench.” Indeed every soul which believes in Jesus is like a sheep in His protecting hands. When the arrows fly to strike us, He closes His hand around us, so no arrow can hit. Rather Jesus’ hands and feet were pierced upon the cross, so our guilty conscience would be absolved, forgiven, and set free. Even so it is written, “Baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
III. The Lord is thy Keeper who will preserve you from all evil. As for the final words of our psalm, “The LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand” and “The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night”, this means God puts Himself between the heat of the sun so we live under His protecting shadow. Likewise even the “moon by night”, sometimes has a bad effect upon the uncovered head of a man. What God means here is that He is both day and night constantly protecting and keeping safe both our body and soul from countless harms and dangers “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
Also we have the promise, “The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” This doesn’t mean we will experience no evil at all in life. All the believers in the Bible experiences many and great evils, some even a martyrs death! But this promise of our Lord teaches us He will preserve us from all evils which will prevent us from reaching heaven. Indeed “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” He guards and protects us then when we leave home and go out to work, and He is preserving us from evil when we come home in the evening, ……”from this time forth and even for evermore.” Knowing God does deliver us from all evil, let us close today with Luther’s good words on the Seventh Petition, “but deliver us from evil.” “What does this mean? We pray in this petition, as the sum of all, that our Father in heaven would deliver us from every evil of body and soul, property and honor, and finally, when our last hour has come grant us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this vale of tears to Himself in heaven.” May God graciously grant it so for every one of us. Amen.
